Costa Rican Scientists Test Enzyme Degrading Pollutants in Rivers

A team of scientists from the Center for Research in Environmental Pollution (CICA) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) will begin experiments with an enzyme capable of degrading certain pollutants that reach the rivers. The enzyme Pycnoporus sanguineous strain CS43 was discovered by a research group in Monterrey and is advantageous in that it resists high temperatures and survives for more than 1,000 days. Read more

The network released a six-part series “documenting the most diverse, iconic and unexpected animal species the country has to offer,” according to a press release from the Costa Rican Tourism Board. Read more 

Costa Rica celebrates 70 years without an army

On Saturday, December 1st, Costa Rica celebrated the 70th anniversary of the abolition of its army. Former President José Figueres Ferrer abolished the armed forces in Costa Rica on Dec. 1, 1948 following the end of the civil war that brought him to power. Current president, Carlos Alvarado addressed the country during an event to commemorate the anniversary. “It is with enormous honor and pride as a Costa Rican that I partake in this commemoration — one that is unique throughout the world,” Alvarado said.
